One of the modules in my first year covered 3D modelling in Maya. As someone new to 3D modelling, I wanted to challenge myself to create a scene with
realism and multiple buildings with modularity. I chose to model based on architecture from the Rattanakosin Era in Thailand, as it is architecture I've seen
often while visiting.
I learnt how to box model and UV wrap to get the colours and textures of the materials correct. The rooves were the main feature of these buildings, with the
body of them being fairly simple concrete blocks. I also used NURBS to draw a cross section, then revolved the NURBS around an axis. In the scene I made the
clay jars using this method, as they are uniform shapes with a simple cross section revolved around the y axis.
After learning to 3D model in Maya, I decided to make some of the models for the group project - Kero Master: Kaeru. I made the grapple vine model,
cloud power up, and fly cage collectable.
The cloud and cage were quite simple mainly with primitives, but the vine was made by drawing a path curve and extruding along it for the main vine, then
drawing smaller path curves and extruding from the main vine out along the new paths.
I feel like now I know how to do basic 3D modelling, I can use this in my games in the future rather than using all free assets online.
